Miles Nzama and Tiego Moseneke, former student activists during the 1980’s and now business men, joined hands to build classrooms in a drive to alleviate overcrowding in our public schools. The first classrooms were handed over to Sefako Mapogo Makgatho Primary School and the community of Atteridgeville by the MEC for Education in Gauteng, Mr. Panyaza Lesufi. This was on Friday 07 February 2020 at 7am. Both Tiego and Miles are from Atteridgeville.
The initiative was a response to a request made by the leaders of the Supreme Cadets Institute (‘SCI’), a youth led non-profit organisation based in Atteridgeville. SCI was founded by Koketso Moseneke, and is funded by Encha Group. Sefako Mapogo Makgatho Primary School is one of SCI’s chosen recruitment centres. It became apparent to the leaders of the SCI working at the school that overcrowding posed a serious challenge. Urgent attention was needed.
With 10 youth leaders, called Rangers and 100 Cadet Members in primary and high schools, the organisation provides academic and social support to inspire the learners to work hard, with the aim of continuing their studies at institutions of higher learning.
VISION 2023 is a program through which 20 Cadets that started Grade 8 in 2019 are closely monitored and supported to ensure successful completion of Matric in the year 2023. It was launched with the first of its kind ‘Graduation Walk’ through the streets of Atteridgeville to “Make Education Fashionable”. The program now has new Grade 8s who joined the program at the beginning of the 2020 academic year.
The goal is to incubate these young learners and mentor them as they navigate institutional and social challenges involved in establishing enterprises in our communities, our country and in the world. We hope that in the next few years they will be leading organisations that are sustainable, that are anchored in the values of honour, integrity as well as accountability; organisations that make a real and measurable difference in the lives of African people.
We hope to motivate other entrepreneurs to assist in the quest for the alleviation of overcrowding in public schools all over our country.
